Free Nikon DSLR Tethering Application for Mac Previously we talked about the free Windows tethering application that does pretty much the expensive Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 is capable of. Now Stefan Hafeneger played with the Nikon SDK packages and created a Mac application that allows tethered shooting with Nikon DSLR cameras. Path-Tech reviews the free Sofortbild tethering software for Mac & Nikon. This is a terrific little program that's extremely intuitive to use and at an unbea. Nikon has released a new app that assists camera owners with both photo management and photo editing, and the best part is that it is free for both Mac and PC users. The software, called NX Studio, is described as one software to do it all, integrates the previously separate ViewNX-i and Capture NX-D pieces of software. Nikon Camera Control pro 2. Can down load and use for free for 30 days. Was just updated to include D810. Sofortbild, free, but not (yet) compatible with D810. ControlMyNikon is one of the most comprehensive and feature-rich tethering software programs for Windows users working with Nikon cameras. Besides all of the standard tethering software features, ControlMyNikon goes above and beyond offering features like loupe view, voice control, white balance calibration, iPad/smartphone integration and many, many other features.
Take control of your Nikon DSLR with this free program
digiCamControl is a free piece of software that recently hit a major milestone: it hit version 1.0, signaling a stable release, suitable for widespread use. Originally known as “Nikon Camera Control”, digiCamControl allows you to remotely operate Nikon DSLRs through your PC, including piping live view through your computer, and many other features.
Once your camera is hooked up to your computer via USB, you can remotely control most of its settings, see the camera’s live view, trigger the shutter, transfer images directly to your computer, control multiple cameras at the same time, and use tools like bracketing, time lapse and focus stacking. Once the camera is attached and set up, you can even control it via an even more remote method, using any machine with a compatible web-browser, like a tablet or smartphone.
You can see a full list of compatible cameras here, which includes most modern Nikon DSLRs, and there are even some hints that Canon support could be in the works.

Or can i hook it up to a tv so i can see what i'm about to photograph? I've seen other people do it but i'm not sure how to or if i even can with my camera
Have you looked on the Nikon website?
As you can see the Nikon tethering software does NOT support the D3100. The lowest cost Nikon dSLR supported by that software is the D5100

Nikon Camera Control Free
Step 1 install free scipt from DIYphotobits at www.diyphotobits.com/
Step 2 plug USB/PC cable in
Step 3 Setup auto import in LR (or other program) including same folder as DIYphotos (I used a tether folder).
Step 4 Click use auto import in LR (leave LR running)
Step 5 Run the DIY script
Step 6 Alter the folder to your preference within the script
Step 7 Click Start tether
Step 8 Set your camera to manual/shutter/aperture priority
Step 9 Turn camera on
Step 10 use it… There's a slight delay of around 5 seconds, but it works… You do not need LR if you just use JPG, the script will preview those.
Nikon Camera Control Software Free
Have you tried using Image Capture? It's an integral part of the Mac OS. It should work but it's a bit clunky. If you've got NX2 it might be worth opening your download folder with it, that way you can edit on the fly.

Tether Nikon To Mac
All but the D3000 (D3000, D3100, etc) series entry level cameras can be tethered, providing you have the right software (Nikon Camera Control 2, Adobe Lightroom, etc).
